Picture of the month
The “jump over the dune” was my first professional car shoot – and my pictures made Fuerteventura famous as a vacation destination
Fuerteventura fifty years ago? An unknown island in the Atlantic Ocean, just outside Africa, completely unknown in this country.
This changed abruptly when a real estate developer from Germany set about developing the island in 1972. Expanding the airport, building hotels – and taking me along to take pictures.
First I photographed the hotel facilities that were being built.
Then I made sure that the hotels were filled with my ideas: The biggest Christmas tree in the world, under the Canary sun at 30 degrees? Eating mussels in a lonely bay, in the middle of the German winter, here on the beach? Windsurfing, that cool new sport that had just come up – in the Atlantic waves?
People were snapping with excitement.
And I took pictures of it.
My photos ended up in all the travel brochures. Kaufhof, Karstadt, Neckermann, all tour operators offered vacations on Fuerteventura, the island became a hit.
I became a car photographer with the 1972 Beach Buggy shoot.

Behind the scenes
“It was clear to me right away: We need a buggy, for these dunes.“
